Police arrest site supervisor; cite lapses in safety measures

The death toll in Friday’s accident at the Vijay Marine Services, Loutolim rose to three after another worker succumbed to his burn injuries on Saturday.
In another development, the Maina-Curtorim police have arrested the site supervisor of Vijay Marine Services Raju Boro, a resident of Quelossim, Mormugao and a native of Assam in connection with the incident.
Maina-Curtorim Police Inspector, Arun Desai confirmed that an injured worker, who was undergoing treatment at the Goa Medical College and Hospital, Bambolim, has succumbed on Saturday, taking the death toll so far to three.
He said three other workers who sustained critical burn injuries in the incident are undergoing treatment at the GMC, Bambolim. The fourth worker, who is believed to have dislocated a bone, is convalescing at the South Goa District Hospital.
The Maina-Curtorim police has registered a FIR under Section 281, 115, 118, 106 (1) BNS 2023.
The names of the deceased persons who were brought dead at the South Goa District Hospital on Friday were provided as Ser Ali, resident of Zuarinagar and a native of West Bengal, Vinod Deewan, a native of Chattisgarh. The third worker, Santosh Kumar, resident of Chattisgarh, has expired while undergoing treatment at GMC Bambolim.
In the FIR, the police have alleged that Vijay Marine Services has failed to provide adequate protective gears to the workers and also to maintain fire safety measures at the site of under construction marine vessel thereby endangering the safety of the workers, as a result of which there was a sudden fire, leaving seven workers injured.
