Anti-coal crusaders checkmate official; hearing postponed

Bowing down to public pressure, South Goa Additional Collector Johnson Fernandes on Monday postponed the public hearing convened on the proposed MPT expansion plans to a later date and at a bigger venue to accommodate the large crowd.

Hundreds of people thronged the Vasco Residency hall, amid strong police security, to voice their concern and to object to the hearing in a hall, on grounds that it could not accommodate all people to express their views on coal dust pollution.  
The hearing for expansion of coal and proposed enhancement of Berths 5A and 6A was met with strong public objection, as they demanded the postponement of the hearing to a later date and at a larger venue.  
The Additional Collector started the hearing by directing the proponent to explain the steps taken to control coal dust pollution. He was quickly stopped from going ahead by John Fernandes from Benaulim stating that hundreds of people were standing on the road outside the hall and they could not hear the proceedings inside the hall. He said the hearing should be postponed to a later date and organised at larger venue.  
The Additional Collector, however, declined to the demand and said that since the hearing was postponed twice
