Anxious moment in Rumdamol as group objects to I-Day banner

MARGAO
The communally-sensitive Rumdamol Housing Board gave some anxious moment late Wednesday night after a group of persons took objection to an Independence Day celebration banner put up in the area. The group also took objection to the social media posts naming of the area as Sultan Nagar.

Rumdamol panchayat member Vinayak Volvoikar informed that an objection was raised over the presence of the photo of Abdul Gaffoor Khan on the banner along with other stalwarts of the Independence movement. “Gaffoor Khan might have fought against the British Raj for the Independence of the country. But, it is also a fact that Gaffoor Khan stayed in Pakistan after the country’s partition. Hence, an objection was raised over Gaffoor Khan’s photo and name on the banner,” he said.

Maina-Curtorim police station in-charge, PI Arun Desai informed that the police booked two persons under prevention detection as a precautionary measure since the group did not disperse from the area after the commotion.

“There was no untoward incident. There was an objection lodged to the presence of names on the Independence Day celebration board. The police invoked prevention detention to ensure that the groups do not call their supporters at the venue,” PI Desai said.
