Archives documents to be protected with multi-level security

PANAJI

Minister for Archives and Archaeology Subhash Phaldesai has said archival documents will soon be preserved and protected by a software having multi-level security features to prevent their misuse and manipulation.

Speaking to the media on Monday, Phaldesai said the need for multilevel security is felt especially after the investigations into land-grabbing by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) have revealed widespread misuse of old documents and the complicity of some staff members.

"Those who genuinely need these documents with purpose, they should get it instantly," Phaldesai said, adding that software will be used to provide safeguards.

The minister also said, digitisation of old documents will also be started immediately, adding that the archives department has done an in depth study of the issue before launching the process soon.

"The documents are delicate. The process is very long. It will take at least 5 years to finish digitisation," Phaldesai said, adding that around 4-6 crore pages need to be digitised.

All these documents, Phaldesai said, need to be preserved in electronic formats as physical documents are being manipulated to perpetrate frauds.

"Once these documents are in electronic form, manipulation will not be possible. Large amounts of land is being grabbed by manipulation of documents," Phaldesai added.
