Benaulim MLA urges protection of mangroves on International Mangroves Day
On International Mangroves Day, Benaulim MLA Venzy Viegas has called for urgent action to protect Goa's mangroves. Viegas expressed concern over the ongoing destruction of mangroves in the name of development and stressed the importance of environmental preservation.
He warned that if we do not take steps to protect our environment, it could lead to severe consequences. Viegas urged everyone to set an example by safeguarding mangroves and exploring replanting efforts to restore these crucial ecosystems.
LoP raises safety of students on overloaded Bal Rath school buses
Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao has raised concerns about the safety of students due to overloaded Bal Raths, which are special buses used to transport schoolchildren. Alemao released a video showing 46 students being transported in a single Bal Rath to watch Assembly proceedings, highlighting the issue and criticised the BJP Government for not addressing the shortage of Bal Raths, leading schools to overload these buses. Alemao pointed out that this situation exposes a lack of concern for the safety and security of students.
High number of chronic alcoholism cases in Goa, reveals govt data
Panaji: State Health Minister Vishwajit Rane presented data on chronic alcoholism cases during a legislative session on Thursday. According to the report, government-run facilities in both districts have seen an average of 3 to 4 new cases of chronic alcoholism each day over the past five years.
The data further reveals that the Institute of Psychiatry and Human Behaviour in Bambolim reported 1 to 2 cases of chronic alcoholism daily from 2019 until May 2024. This highlights the ongoing challenge of managing chronic alcoholism in the state.
Panaji MLA addresses issues affecting 'Smart City'
Panaji MLA Atanasio Monserrate has commented on several important issues affecting the city. He stated that he has no further comments on the TCP minister. The Outline Development Plan (ODP) has been sent to the Planning and Development Authority (PDA) for review and feedback.
Monserrate also mentioned that the quality of the smart city work will be evaluated after the monsoon season. He expressed uncertainty about whether the overflowing sewage chambers in the city are connected to new or old lines but assured that the issue will be investigated.
DMA itself a disaster, Yuri slams govt dept's response to emergencies
Panaji: Opposition Leader Yuri Alemao has criticized the handling of ferry boat incidents after the Piedade Ferry Boat broke down twice, first in 2018 and again in 2024. Alemao pointed out that rescue operations during both incidents put passengers, including women, at risk.
He condemned the response of the Disaster Management Authority, stating that the repeated breakdowns and dangerous rescue operations indicate a serious failure in managing such emergencies.
