At Vijai’s first Janata Darbar, Margao council gets drubbing

Expressing dissatisfaction over the functioning of Margao Municipal Council administration, TCP Minister Vijai Sardesai at his first Janata Darbar promised to get a full-time dedicated Chief Officer to man the affairs of the municipality and has set deadlines for the repair of the Margao flyover and finalize the contractor for the parking plaza behind the municipal building.

"I am not happy with the MMC administration. The administration is rusted and beyond redemption. It is not sensitive to people, who are deprived of time-bound services. The staff is not people friendly," Sardesai told the media after the first sitting of the Janata Darbar as he tried to offer on the spot solutions to a host of issues, including individual cases.
While agreeing that there's an urgent need to appoint a dedicated Chief Officer for Margao, Sardesai said that either incumbent CO Agnelo Ferna
ndes will take full charge of the civic body or a new officer will assume charge within a week's time.
On the huge delay in the commencement of work on the parking project at the old fish market, the
TCP Minister directed the civic body to cancel the tender and re-tender the project if GST has come in the way of the execution of the project. "This cannot go on forever. I want a decision within one week," he said.
On the question of the Margao flyover, Sardesai told senior engineer Prasad Panandikar to take up work on the repair of the flyover immediately. It has been finally decided to close the flyover for a day after the feast of Our Lady of Rosary Church, Navelim, scheduled on
November 15.
The minister announced loyalty bonus for loyal tax payers, who had complained of discrimination by the civic body, saying he would request Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar to work out the
bonus for them. He made the statement after the loyal tax payers led by Savio Coutinho demanded to know why only the legal assessed premises are penalized with the imposition of sanitation fees against the legally assessed premises and why the thousands of illegal commercial establishments are given the benefit of either zero sanitation fees or minimum sanitation fees.
Replying to a question, Sardesai said the only remedy to tone up the municipal administration is to get in private hands, particularly on the garbage ad revenue recovery fronts. "The municipality requires additional manpower. At the same time, the 7th Pay Commission will affect the civic offers. Hence, the best way is to outsource garbage and revenue recovery," he added.
The TCP Minister said time has come to review the presence of scrapyards, saying these should be shifted out of the city. "Scrapyards are also part of solid waste management, but they cannot operate on widening roads," he asserted.
Sardesai also issued instructions to the police and municipality to remove all barricades with no parking boards illegally erected by the traders on the roads.
