The 108 EMRI ambulance paramedical staff may have had little clue over what was in store for them when they were assigned emergency duties in what seemed like an innocuous call to attend to a woman in labour pain.
But in two separate incidents, separated by a matter of weeks, the paramedic staff who accompany the ambulances ended up assisting in the deliveries.
Last Friday, on October 27, the ambulance helpline received a call at around 2 am from Carrasvaddo in Mapusa. When the ambulance arrived, the paramedics realised the woman was in an advanced state of labour. She was shifted to an ambulance where the paramedic named Sarita assisted in the delivery.
"Both mother and infants are safe. They were admitted to the nearest hospital (after delivery)," Sarita said.
In the second instance, which happened in the month of September, a woman from Candolim delivered a newborn at 11.35 pm on September 18 once again in the ambulance and with the assistance of the paramedics from the 108 medical service.
"Both mother and infants are safe. They were admitted to the Candolim Hospital," Divya Lohar the paramedic said.
The EMRI service, started in Goa a little less than a decade ago, has promised a quick ambulance service to cater to the state of Goa. While complaints persist, the service is often the first
option for several emergencies including road accidents and
other casualties.
