Four days after Sonsodo was engulfed by a raging fire, authorities finally got their act together and launched coordinated action at the site, with the fire services mobilizing men and machinery at the waste dump, including a hydraulic ladder, in a bid to cap the fire at the earliest.
The action from the fire services came moments after the District Collector Ajit Roy finally convened a high level meeting of the heads of various authorities, including the fire services, Margao Municipal Police, district police, etc.
Around 10 fire tenders requisitioned from South Goa were deployed at the site since noon to spray enzymes and water at the site. A hydraulic ladder requisitioned from Panjim was found working at the site spraying a consignment of 500 litres of enzymes since noon.
Margao Municipal Chief Officer Sidhivinayak Naik and Municipal engineer Manoj Arsekar informed that the fire services in coordination with the MMC will resume spraying of the enzymes on the dump from 7 pm, adding that the exercise will continue past midnight. However, the operation did not commence till 8 pm as the team was awaiting for the arrival of the enzyme consignment at the site.
Divisional Fire Officer, Nitin Raikar told the media that fire tenders, around 10 in number, were working at the Sonsodo site since noon. He said that new fire recruits, who were undergoing training at Goa, were also deployed in the fire-fighting operation at Sonsodo. “Our fire tenders are deployed at Sonsodo to spray water and the enzyme in a bid to bring the fire under control,” Raikar said, adding that the fire services have managed to douse the fire to a large extent after today’s operations.
The deployment of the hydraulic ladder helped the firemen target the middle and higher reaches of the dump which was inaccessible thus far.
