Driven by festive demand and a boost from the recent GST rate cut, the auto sector in Goa witnessed record-breaking monthly sales in October with a considerable 7.8 per cent rise compared to the similar period in 2024. The month saw as many as 11,317 new vehicles getting registered following an unprecedented surge in demand.
In October 2024, 10, 494 new vehicles were sold, when the GST was at 28 per cent for small as well as luxury cars.
As per the official data, more than 90 per cent of the total vehicles were non-transport vehicles --10,260-registered in October, of which 2,691 were four-wheelers and around 7,536 were two-wheelers. According to the automobile sector, strong sales were recorded across brands such as Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors, Hyundai, MG, etc, with luxury-high end cars also being in demand despite 40 per cent flat GST slab with petrol and diesel cars dominating the market.
Under the GST 2.0 regime, the Goods and Services Tax on cars has been reduced from 28 per cent to 18 per cent for small cars --petrol/LPG/CNG engines under 1200cc or diesel engines under 1500cc. With GST on electric vehicles being untouched at 5 per cent -- lowest with 673 EV vehicles -- both two and four-wheelers were sold during the month.
October saw demand for a total of 1,023 electric, hybrid, and battery-operated vehicles ” a number that still lags behind their traditional fuel-based counterparts.
During the period, 1,055 transport vehicles including 260 motor cabs were registered along with 294 motorcycles or scooters used for hiring. Also, 72 new private passenger buses were also added to the fleet.
So far in 2025, a total of 70,652 vehicles have been sold across Goa, with eight vehicles already getting registered on the very first day of November. The total revenue collection across various RTOs has been over Rs 372 crore. In 2024, as many as 84,321 vehicles were registered.
