MARGAO
Margao Municipal Councillor Babita Naik returned back on the vice-Chairperson’s saddle after 14 long years after she was declared unopposed on the vacant post on Tuesday.
The last time Babita was elected as the MMC Vice-chairperson was in December 2008 and she occupied the post and presided over the post till March 2010. Incidentally, Babita’s Councillor husband and four-time MMC Councillor Sadanand Naik held the Vice-Chairperson’s post in the year 1995.
Babita’s election as the new Margao Municipal vice-Chairperson was a foregone conclusion after the Presiding Officer Ramesh Gaonkar had received her lone nomination papers for the post, left vacant by the resignation of outgoing vice-Chairperson Deepali Sawal.
The Goa Forward party backed group and the lone Independent Ganashyam Shirodkar stayed away from the election for the vacant post.
After her election, Babita was greeted by the ruling group of Councillors led by Chairperson Damu Shirodkar. She later thanked the Councillors as well as the Margao MLA Digambar Kamat and former Fatorda MLA Damu Naik for reposing faith in her and nominating her for the post.
