A day after convening its first-ever Mahila Sabha, the Agonda Panchayat conducted its first Bal Gram Sabha and the children seized the opportunity to put forth a demand for a Children’s Park in the village.
About 70 children from the village’s two schools, St Anne’s Institute and Government High School, put forth the lone demand for a Children’s Park before the Agonda panchayat, which was chaired by Sarpanch Prettal Fernandes.
Earlier, Fernandes explained to the children the nature of a panchayat and a Gram Sabha.
Fernandes also provided information of how panchayat members are elected, the role of panchas in promoting development and improving public-related services, and issues taken up by the panchayat and put forth before the government for implementation.
The children were also shown videos on road traffic discipline and were apprised of the dangers of driving two-wheelers or cars underaged and without driving licences.
Traffic ASI Vasu P Gaonkar gave a talk to the children on the dangers of careless driving and guided children on traffic rules, regulations and traffic signs.
Dr Classie Furtado from Health Services explained to children about the importance of personal hygiene and diet to sustain a healthy life.
Sarpanch Prettal Fernandes, Dy Sarpanch Karuna Faldessai, Agonda Panchayat Secretary Amol Naik Gaonkar, BDO staffer Harsha Naik Gaonkar, panchayat representatives, staff from the Canacona Community Health Centre and Home Guard Nilesh Velip were present at the Bal Gram Sabha.
