The Bombay High Court at Goa has ordered the Crime Branch of the Goa Police to submit within two months the report of the Banastarim bridge accident in order that the Motor Vehicles Claims Tribunal can begin processing the compensation claims.
The order was issued while hearing a petition filed by Meghana Sinai Sawardekar, the owner of the Mercedes SUV that crashed into four vehicles at high speed at the start of the Banastarim bridge killing three people and injuring six others in early August.
Earlier Meghana had, on the directions of the High Court, offered to deposit Rs 2-crore in the High Court that will be used as compensation for the victims, over and above the claims that will be decided by the Tribunal.
At the hearing it also was decided that of the Rs 2-crore deposited by Meghana, the Phadte family of Divar who lost two members will receive Rs 50 lakh, the parents of Arup Karmakar, who also succumbed will receive Rs 50-lakh. Among the injured Shankar Harlankar who suffered permanent injuries will receive 40-lakh, Vanita Bhandari who also suffered permanent injuries will receive 35-lakh and Raj Majgaonkar will get Rs 25-lakh.
On Wednesday, Meghana Sawardekar informed the court that the money was already deposited before the Court.
