Amid claims from witnesses that Meghana Kamat Sawardekar was driving the Mercedes at the time of the accident and authorities continuing to maintain stoic silence to clear the confusion, highly placed sources informed that the couple have claimed that she was indeed behind the wheel, but after the crash, to save her husband. The theory is also making the round even as cops have managed to record her statement only once while two notices have returned empty.
Doubts over claim
There's however skepticism into this claim as she could have surrendered to the police. "If she took over the steering after the accident to save her husband, she should have also surrendered instead of letting the police arrest Paresh. Why has she not done that? Why are the police officials so secretive about this case?" a senior officer, who is closely monitoring the case, questioned.
Police credibility
Goa police's credibility has come under scrutiny after the initial attempt to hush up the case. The number of calls made to the police after the accident, secrecy surrounding the driver's identity are just some of several questions raised not by citizens only but also some serving and retired police officers, who are keeping a close watch on the case.
An officer highlighted that Meghana should have been subjected to a medical examination regardless of whether she was driving the car, as a precautionary measure for the sake of an unbiased probe.
Suggestions are also made to conduct lie detector tests on both Paresh and Meghana, as well as to verify the call details of the Mardol police. "It will address conflicting statements," another officer said.
If Meghana is proven to be the driver, Paresh could face charges for providing false statements and destroying evidence, while Meghana could be booked under section 304-A of the IPC.
