Bar mapping to begin in Ponda today

The Ponda Excise office will start its mapping programme from Wednesday to identify the bars located within the 500-metre zone from national and state highways.
The Ponda Excise office has to complete the excercise by February 28.
Excise officer Amol Harwalkar informed that there are about 790 liquor outlets and bars in Ponda taluka, of which 280 are in close proximity to the national and state highways.
The Supreme Court's decision to ban liquor outlets and bars in close proximity to national and state highways has forced the excise officials to start the groundwork to implement the Apex court's orders.
Sources informed that the committee headed by the Mamlatdar will identify the bars and liquor outlets located within the 500-metre zone from national and state highways.
According to Harwalkar the PWD engineers would assist them to know which roads comes under state and national highways. “We will show them the bars and liquor outlets and then it will be decided whether that particular outlet or bar comes within 500 metres of national or state highways,” he said.
Sources informed that Talathi and officials of the Town and Country Planning will also assist to map the bars and outlets.
