Beggars shunted out from MMC garden benches

MARGAO

After turning a blind eye to the menace of beggars and anti-socials sleeping on the Margao Municipal Council garden benches and adjoining areas, the Margao police cracked a whip against these people throughout Friday.

Perhaps for the first time in recent years, the benches of the MMC garden were found empty. Similar was the situation around the Comunidade and MMC buildings.

Attribute it to the Swapnil Walke murder case or simply an action following criticism by Madgavkars, the Margao cops, who have been turning a blind eye to the nuisance, did not allow anyone to either sit or sleep on the benches or in the passages of the MMC building.

Apparently, the policemen were under strict instructions from their superiors to drive away the migrants.

While the garden benches were found empty and not a single person was found squatting in the passages of the Comunidade or MMC building, no one knows for sure where the beggars headed after the police drive.

Sources pointed out that while the Margao police have cracked a whip against the beggars and miscreants, they must have taken shelter at the Old Station Road area, which is the home for migrants over the years.

The DGP on Thursday told the media that strict instructions have been issued to the police personnel to act against the beggar menace on the benches and other locations.

The action has come after complaints received by the police that miscreants or make-believe beggars have mixed with beggars and have been creating nuisance around the MMC building and garden areas.
