While the Belagavi district authorities have upped their ante against illicit Goa liquor being transported in Belagavi district, incidents of Goa liquor being carried to Karnataka in wake of forthcoming Karnataka Assembly elections are on the rise.
Belagavi excise team has seized Rs 33 lakh worth Goa liquor near Hukkeri. The raid was carried under the guidance of senior excise officials at around 4 pm. 50 boxes carrying 450 litres of Paul John Brilliance single malt whiskey was seized.
Mahindra pickup vehicle registration number KA 01AM 8938 was carrying the liquor. Dharmendra Jahangir, the driver of the vehicle was taken into custody. Excise inspectors of Hukkeri division carried the raid under the direction and guidance of senior officers.
It may be noted that in wake of the forthcoming elections to the Karnataka Assembly, incidents of transporting Goa liquor to Karnataka are on the rise. Belagavi district authorities have intensified the vigil on the illicitly transported liquor from Goa.
Earlier on March 18, the Khanapur excise officials had seized about 700 boxes containing 3,905 litres of liquor were seized.
