Days after a group of activists assembled at the Khareband junction to question the road expansion work, Benaulim MLA Churchill Alemao descended on the spot to supervise the work and to take potshots at those opposing development work.

Accompanied by Benaulim panchayat members, Xavier Fernandes, Menino de Bandar and Remy Fernandes, besides former Sarpanch Ashok Audi, Churchill told the media that work on the road expansion work at the Khareband junction is going on as per schedule. “Expansion of the junction on the Benaulim side has been the long-pending demand of the people. I have taken up the works through the Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation (GSIDC) at a cost of Rs 24.95 crore,” he said, adding “the GSIDC will take up the road works in all the villages of Benaulim constituency”.

Taking potshots at the activists who tried to stop the road expansion work, Churchill said these people have no development agenda. “Their one-point agenda is to stop development work. When some people came to the road junction to stop work, residents of Benaulim including panchayat members turned up in large numbers to take on them since they want development,” he said.

The Benaulim MLA also launched hot-mixing works at Benaulim at a cost of Rs 2.22 crore, which will cover the roads right up to Maria Hall.

The Benaulim MLA had a day ago unveiled his plan to install a statue or bust of Dr Jack Sequeira at the

Khareband junction once it is beautified.
