The gram sabha of Betalbatim village on Sunday discussed proposals to increase house tax, trade licence fees, and garbage collection fees.

The issue of mega housing projects also came up at the gram sabha meeting, chaired by Sarpanch Anthony Fernandes, where members vehemently opposed such projects in the village.

The panchayat members discussed the reassessment of house tax, as well as trade licence fees for commercial establishments and garbage collection fees.

Some members demanded that the Panchayat increase the fines for miscreants dumping garbage in unauthorised places in the village. The Sarpanch responded, saying the Panchayat is currently imposing a fine of Rs 2000 on violators, in addition to requiring them to lift the garbage.

Later, briefing the media, the Sarpanch informed that the meeting had approved a marginal increase in house tax, trade licence fees, and garbage collection fees.

Regarding the mega housing projects, the Sarpanch said he explained to the members that the Panchayat had rejected the applications for construction licences for four projects, two of which have been appealed to the Block Development office.
