PORVORIM
The video clip of a man from Betim being assaulted by four persons went viral on social media, prompting an angry BJP delegation to march to the Porvorim police station to demand action against the accused.
A delegation of BJP workers met Porvorim Police Inspector Paresh Naik on Thursday and complained that though the incident had taken place in broad daylight in Betim on January 30 and a video clip had gone viral, the police had not taken any action in the matter.
The delegation, which comprised North Goa BJP General Secretary Guruprasad Pawaskar, former Bal Bhavan Chairperson Kunda Chodankar, Porvorim BJP Mandal President Mahananda Asnodkar and Kishor Asnodkar, said the incident and police inaction had indicated that law and order did not exist in Goa and that, the public had no fear of the police.
The delegation then summoned the victim, Shaym Fatarpekar (41), to the police station and requested him to narrate the incident and display the injuries on his body.
Fatarpekar stated that the incident had taken place while returning home from Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) on January 30 at about 3.40 pm. He accused Prashant Sawant, Siddhant Halarnkar, Ashish Naik and Hussain Shaikh of pushing him from behind and throwing him on the ground.
Fatarpekar said while one of them slapped him, another placed a cloth in his mouth and a third person held him tight, while all of them began assaulting him.
Fatarpekar added that one person then assaulted him with a wooden rib with nails on it, causing him injuries all over his body, while another accused was filming the incident. They were also accused of threatening the wife of the complainant. Fatarpekar told the police that his sister and her husband heard of the incident and rushed to the site, while the accused fled from the scene. He was later taken to the hospital for treatment.
After hearing Fatarpekar’s narration of events, Police Inspector Paresh Naik advised him to file a complaint and assured him that necessary action would be taken against the accused. Fatarpekar later filed a police complaint and a case was registered by the police under Sections 143, 147, 148, 324, 506 (ii) r/w 149 IPC. PSI Prasad Palni is investigating the case.
