Betul coastal police and local fishermen managed to seize a fishing boat from a neighbouring state fishing very close off the Benaulim coast on Wednesday.
The fishing vessel was later handed over to the Director of Fisheries for further action against the fishing vessel.
The fishing vessel had netted tons of baby mackerel and king fish, besides other variety of fish, including tuna fish, which was found stacked inside the vessel.
Betul Coastal police in-charge, PI Theron D’Costa informed that acting on a tip off by Benaulim fisherman, the coastal police team went after the fishing vessel which was found fishing close to the Benaulim coast. “The Coastal police have seized the fishing vessel and has handed over to the Fisheries department to initiate further action”, PI Theron said.
Benaulim fisherman Pele Fernadnes thanked the Betul coastal police for immediately responding to the help sought by the fishermen to detain and seize the vessel.
“After we found the outside fishing boats fishing close to Benaulim beach, I immediately informed the Coastal police for help. We provide the police team with the speed boat to get to the fishing vessel before it was finally seized”, Pele said.
Pele recalled that Chief Minister Pramod Sawant had recently directed the fisheries department to seize all outside fishing vessels fishing very close to the Goa coast to protect the interest of the local fishermen.
