BITS Pilani student drowns

A 22-year-old student of BITS Pilani Zuarinagar from UP, drowned off Sada beach near Japanese Garden on Monday.

According to Mormugao Police, the incident occurred when a group of five students from BITS Pilani, one Goan and four outstation students, went for a picnic at Japanese Garden at Sada.
Police said the five students of the 4th year electronic engineering at BITS Pilani had planned a picnic after the Sunday's convocation programme at the college, as Monday and Tuesday are holidays.
Police added that after swimming and coming to the shore, two boys started drifting in the sea due to strong undercurrents. The group of three students on the shore rushed and pulled one boy out, while Harshit Sharma started to drift in the sea.
"We received the call at 4.45 pm and we rushed to the site and began search operation with the help of Coastal Police rescue boats and Jet Ski of the Drishti Lifeguards," informed Mormugao PSI S Pillai.
"The crew of rescue team had a tough time to retrieve Harshit due to high tide and finally managed to get him out from the waters near MPT Berth 9. We rushed him to Chicalim Cottage Hospital for medical treatment. However, the doctor declared him dead on arrival. ," added PSI Pillai. Investigations are on.
