CANACONA
Concerned about inadequate rainfall and the possibility of a water shortage across Canacona taluka, the Shristhal Biodiversity Management Committee (BMC) has sought the construction of temporary minor bandharas across the taluka.
The Shristhal BMC submitted a memorandum to Goa State Biodiversity Board (GSBB) Member Secretary Dr Pradeep Sarmokadam at Saligao, proposing the construction of temporary minor bandharas across various rivulets and nullahs in the panchayat area.
The BMC has also expressed its willingness to undertake the water conservation initiative with the support of the GSBB and other concerned departments and agencies.
According to Shristhal BMC Chairman Vinay Tubki, the GSBB and the Water Resources Department should propose temporary bandharas in all villages across Canacona taluka to help conserve water.
“Immediate measures are needed to conserve the available water before it is completely depleted and to improve groundwater recharge. It is common knowledge that the State has received very moderate rainfall this monsoon, and even Canacona’s only lifeline, the Chapoli dam, has, for the first time, failed to reach its full reservoir level,” said Tubki.
Along with Tubki, GSBB member Shirish Pai also highlighted the need for water conservation measures across water bodies that are steadily depleting.
