MARGAO

As residents of Curtorim once again hit the streets to stop Margao Municipal Council garbage trucks from entering the Sonsodo site on Friday, Curtorim MLA Reginaldo Lourenco virtually gave a two-day deadline on the government to either cap the fire and smoke or face the wrath of the people.

Reginaldo threatened to mobilise people on both sides of Sonsodo, from Curtorim as well as from Fatorda to protest against the indifference of the administration to give relief to the residents affected by toxic smoke since the last five days.

“The people have begun to doubt the integrity of the government. Even after extending support to the government, nothing seems to be working at the site since the last five days. I am taking the people from Curtorim, Vidhyanagar and even people from Vijai Sardesai’s constituency into confidence before launching an agitation,” he warned.

Saying that the administration has only shed crocodile tears, Reginaldo demanded to know why no medical teams have descended on Maina to check the health of the residents of distribute them face masks to protect them from the toxic smoke.

Saying that the government and the administration are taking the beleaguered people for granted, the MLA said the youth are all ready to stop the garbage-laden trucks from entering Sonsodo. “Why is Sonsodo not receiving segregated waste. The new government has completed two years in office, but it has failed to solve the solid waste management issue plaguing Sonsodo,” he asserted.

Asserting that people will stop all garbage vehicles from entering Sonsodo, he said the youth from Curtorim, Vidhyanagar and Fatorda will wait for a day or two to launch an agitation.

Earlier, Curtorim Sarpanch Rui Menezes, panch member Simon Barretto, Chairman of the Curtorim Bio-diversity Committee J Santan Rodrigues and other villagers said they have come to stop the garbage trucks from entering Sonsodo.
