Calangute Police and the Goa Medical College and Hospital, Bambolim, are awaiting the consent of relatives of 58 year-old British national Paul Gerrard Atkinson, who died during a fitness workout in Fitness World gymnasium at Calangute on March 24, to conduct post-mortem examination of his body.

Jivba Dalvi stated, “We are awaiting formal consent from the family of the deceased to conduct post mortem. His body was sent to GMC on Friday after the unfortunate incident. We have forwarded communication in this regard to his relatives in the UK through the FRRO office as per the rules.” On March 24, Atkinson began his fitness routine as usual but suddenly collapsed while exercising at around 6.30 pm.
The 108 ambulance paramedics declared the foreigner dead.
Though this is suspected to be a case of cardiac arrest, the autopsy report is awaited for pinpointing the exact cause of death.
Atkinson had joined the fitness training center in February and was a regular visitor to the gym.
At the time of the incident, Atkinson was doing his own workout and wasn’t under any guidance from the instructors in the gym. The gym employees informed that a medical certificate isn’t mandatory for customers who seek admission for a short period.
Calangute Police have registered the case as unnatural death and further inquiry is
in progress.
