Speaking to The Goan at the Porvorim police station, Harshad Naik said he was proceeding from Virlosa towards Betim on his scooter along with a minor pillion rider, while a car was also proceeding towards Betim.
“The car overtook my scooter and the driver suddenly stopped his car in front of my scooter. I lost control of the scooter and dashed against the car. The driver got out of his vehicle and assaulted the minor pillion rider,” said Naik.
“As locals gathered at the spot, the driver abandoned the car at the site and fled away. Based on the FIR filed, police have registered the case, but have not issued us the FIR copy,” said Naik.
Incidentally, the car driver is the spouse of a former Penha-da-Franca sarpanch.
Other residents, Bhagirathi Volvoikar, Sunita Naik, Shivani Bhonsale and M Volvoikar then went to the police station and claimed that the police should have brought the car driver to the police station and registered a case against him.
“Had they done so, the police would have known that the car driver was under the influence of alcohol. However, the police did not summon the car driver to the police station and instead, asked us to come to the police station on Tuesday morning. All this makes it clear that the police is shielding the car driver,” alleged one villager.
When contacted, Porvorim police said a case has been registered under Sections 279, 321 and 506 of Indian Penal Code and Section 8 of Children’s Act and had sent the minor pillion rider to Goa Medical College hospital at Bambolim for a medical
examination.
