MARGAO

In a major daylight burglary, unknown miscreants struck gold at a bungalow at Kirbhat-Nuvem on Tuesday morning, decamping with gold ornaments, US dollars and imported watches.

While the family has pegged the total loss of property to around Rs 8-10 lakh, Maina-Curtorim police said they were verifying the exact loss of items from the house.

The incident occurred when the owner Wolfango Dias had left the house at around 11 to go to a bank.

Earlier in the morning, Dias had dropped his wife and son to the Margao railway station as they had booked tickets for Mumbai.

On returning home from the railway station, Dias dropped his daughter-in-law to Majorda.

Maina-Curtorim PI Gurudas Kadam informed that the incident must have occurred between 11 am to 3 pm when Dias returned home for lunch.

Dias was surprised to find the main door latched from inside.

His worst fears came true when he found the rear window grill removed and kept on the bed. Taking advantage of the absence of the occupants in the house, the miscreants went about ransacking the entire place and managed to lay their hands on gold ornaments, including necklaces, pairs of earrings, gold chains, imported watches and around 1500-2000 US dollars.

Family members said the actual loss of property would be known only after the son returns home from Mumbai.

Dias said his son had brought him an imported watch to gift him on his birthday scheduled later this month.

His friend Godfrey Mascarenhas told the media that he rushed to Dias’s house after receiving a call about the burglary.

PI Kadam informed that the police had pressed into service the police sniffer dog and the fingerprint experts to obtain clues in the investigations. “Some fingerprints have been obtained,” he added
