Burglars broke into seven villas at the Highlands Villa gated residential complex at Torda, Porvorim in the wee hours of Saturday.
Chairperson of Highland Villas Co-operative Housing Maintenance Society Ltd Sunil Tandon filed a complaint with Porvorim police stating that some persons broke open the windows of seven villas of their society sometime between 12.30 am and 3.45 am after scaling the compound wall of the gated society.
The burglars also damaged the CCTV cameras of different villas.
When contacted, Porvorim Police Inspector Tukaram Chavan said though burglaries took place between 12.30 am and 3.45 am, the complaint was filed with the Porvorim police station only at 11 am.
“If the complaint was filed in the morning, it would have been possible to act faster in the matter. CCTV footage indicates that four persons were involved in the burglaries. What is surprising is that there were eight security guards on duty, but none of them was awake,” said PI Chavan.
On receipt of complaint, a police dog squad and fingerprint experts were pressed into service.
Later, Tourism Minister and Porvorim MLA Rohan Khaunte visited the site and interacted with the police and the residents. He advised police to increase the night patrolling in Porvorim on account of a rise in burglaries.
