Mystery shrouds the death of a 25-year-old resident of Santemol-Raia, Seeto Marques as his burnt body was found lying at an isolated place at Devotte-Loutolim on Thursday morning.
The Maina-Curtorim police have registered a case of unnatural death and is apparently waiting for the post mortem examination to take place on Friday to shed light on the cause of death and whether any other injuries had resulted in his death.
District police chief, SP, South, Arvind Gawas, who visited the spot, told The Goan that the police is investigating the incident from all angles. He said the police is not ruling out anything for the moment and will probe the case from all angles.
When his attention was drawn to the fact that the police has registered a case of unnatural death instead of murder, SP Gawas informed that the case was registered as unnatural death for the moment since the police could not conclude that it was a clear case of murder. He, however, hastened to add that police would register the case as murder depending on the investigations and the post mortem examination report.
Investigating Officer, PI Gurudas Kadam informed that Seeto had gone missing from his house on Wednesday evening. “Information reveals that he was last seen at the Borim bridge toll naka. There was a search initiated by the family when Seeto did not turn up on Wednesday evening. After dropping his friend, he was supposed to go home to light the star, but his mother, who was at home had lit the star,” he said.
As the incident spread like wild fire in the villages of Raia and Loutolim on Thursday, questions have been raised how the deceased reached the isolated spot and whether he was taken there before being set on fire.
PI Kadam said the police will investigate the incident from various angles, including the angle whether the deceased was taken to the spot and set afire. He said the police will wait for the post mortem examination to find out whether there were any injuries which resulted in his death. “Since the skin has peeled off because of the burning, one cannot notice any injuries on the body. The autopsy will shed light on the injuries aspect,” he said. Police pointed out that burn marks could be seen at the place around a 7-metre radius from where the body was recovered.
Senior police officials, including district police chief, South, Arvind Gawas, Sub-Divisional Police Officer, Margao DySP Serafino Dias, Curtorim MLA Reginaldo Lourenco and others rushed to the spot after the body was traced at Devote-Loutolim.
The Maina-Curtorim police requisitioned the services of the police dog as well as the finger print experts to assist in the investigations.
PI Kadam said while the two-wheeler of the deceased was found parked at the spot, with the keys on the scooter, his wallet was also found in the scooter. He, however, said the mobile phone, which was on the person of the deceased, was damaged in the incident.
