MARGAO

Even as the Fomento management had agreed to allow the Margao Municipal Council to carry on the operation to cart away the waste late through the night on Thursday, the civic body was literally caught napping as it failed to mobilise men and machinery to cart away the balance 700 tons waste rejects from the waste treatment plant.

For the last two days, the civic body had gone to the town saying that the exercise to cart away the waste from the waste treatment plant has been hit with the Concessionaire not allowing its men and machinery to work beyond 6 pm at the plant.

While the Fomento management agreed to keep open the waste treatment plant till late in the night on Thursday to facilitate the civic body to cart away the rejects following the intervention of district Collector, South Prasanna Acharya, the civic body was found wanting in mobilising the machinery to carry out the operation.

What’s interesting to note is that while district Collector, South Acharya briefed the media at 5 pm on Thursday to announce that Fomento has agreed to keep open the plant till late in the night, the Municipal administration even failed to keep the Council in the loop in the matter.

In fact, acting MMC Chairperson Tito Cardozo, was not informed of the development and he came to know of the factual position only at around 9.30 pm when Municipal officials informed that the operation could not be continued for want of logistics.

Given the situation, Tito has now told the officials to resume the operation at 7 am in the morning and make provisions for men and machinery so that the operation is carried out the entire night on Friday.

Meanwhile, sources informed that the MMC has till date carted away around 700 tons of the rejects from the waste treatment plant in the last four days. Sources in the know informed that around 700 tons of rejects is still lying in the plant and it may take minimum two days to clear the plant of the rejects.

Rains disrupted the ongoing operation on Thursday, as the wet spell made the dump slippery, forcing the civic body to dump rubble to make way for the trucks to unload the rejects on the existing dump.

Will take a day or two to clear garbage piled up in city: Margao council
MARGAO: The Margao Municipal Council on Thursday said it will take a day or two to clear the piled up garbage from the commercial capital, exuding confidence that the situation would return to normal by Friday evening.
“We have cleared the markets of the waste. And, the door-to-door waste collection has started once again,” Margao Municipal engineer Agostinho Mesquita told The Goan on Thursday.
He said the focus of the municipality has been to clear the mounds of waste along the road sides and at the transfer stations. “From Wednesday evening and today, we have concentrated on collection of waste from the households, which had piled up in the last two days,” he said.
When his attention was drawn to the pile of waste still lying at the transfer stations and at the black spots, Mesquita said garbage trucks have taken rounds of the city, clearing the piled up waste, and to collect the fresh waste coming from the households.
