Town and country planning Minister, Vijai Sardesai only assured that the coalition government would come out with a concrete plan as a befitting tribute to Dr Gomes two years from now
on his 150th death anniversary, favouring the setting up of a museum in memory of the nationalist, but he was guarded in his stand over the acquisition of the ancestral house for posterity.
"The government of the day has not given official sanctity to the death anniversary programs of Dr Francis Luis Gomes. Dr Gomes
has been a great nationalist and only goes to show the contribution made by the minorities to the nation," Vijai said.
He said the coalition government would work out something special in memory of Dr Gomes such a memorial before his 150th death anniversary.
"There's an ownership dispute concerning the ancestral house of Dr Gomes. Where the memorial will come up will be decided in due course of time," he said.
Vijai, however, said it is the duty of the government to take the ideals and values espoused by Dr Gomes to the people, while underlining the need to take his legacy to the future generation.
In his brief address, Margao MLA Digambar Kamat said that Dr Gomes had taken the voice of Goa at the international level during those days, while stressing on the need to spread his work amongst the people.
Freedom fighter Gurunath Kelekar said that Dr Gomes was the greatest Goemkar who took pride in saying that he hails from the land of Mahabharata.
"I appeal to you to take the initiative and restore the legacy of the great Goan. A life size statue of Dr Gomes is installed in Panaji, while the district library is named after him. Now what we want is the ancestral house," Kelekar said.
