The Goa Cabinet gave its clearance for setting up a nearly Rs 400 crore solid waste treatment plant at Cacora in Curchorem constituency while also granting approval for an upgrade of the existing plant at Saligao at an estimated cost of Rs 180-odd crore.
Panchayat Minister Mauvin Godinho told the media that the proposals were unanimously approved at the Cabinet meeting held at Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar’s private residence at Dona Paula on Monday evening.
The decision assumes significance in the wake of an garbage crisis faced by villages in North Goa and several others in South after the plant at Saligao stopped accepting it from panchayats other than those from Bardez claiming it was already handling waste beyond its capacity.
Meanwhile, in other decisions, the State Cabinet has given its nod for the formal transfer of the loss-making Sanjivani sugar factory to the Agriculture Department, TCP Minister, Vijai Sardesai, who also holds the agriculture portfolio, told the media.
Sports Minister Manohar Ajgaonkar said, a decision to grant ‘temporary status’ to the 183 contract employees of the Sports Department was also approved by the Cabinet.
