Calangute MLA asks p’yats to prioritise infra over builder interests

MAPUSA

Calangute MLA Michael Lobo expressed concerns on Wednesday about certain panchayat members prioritising construction projects over local infrastructure needs. Without naming individuals, Lobo criticised some panchayats for focusing on builders’ developments rather than community requirements.

“There are sarpanchas and ward members interested only in the files of builders, not those serving the local community,” he stated, urging a shift towards improving village infrastructure.

Recently, he targeted the Assagao panchayat for its lack of development initiatives amid a surge in construction that has driven up land prices. Lobo emphasised that basic infrastructure, like road repairs and drainage, should take precedence.

He pointed out that panchayat members often blame the MLA for disrepair when roads are dug for utilities. “If roads are dug up, shouldn’t ward members also take responsibility?” he questioned, urging collaboration to identify and fix issues.

Lobo noted that while the Public Works Department (PWD) is ready to help, many panchayat members fail to coordinate on projects. He also highlighted the inefficient use of panchayat funds, urging a focus on community improvements like pothole-free roads and enhanced safety measures in accident-prone areas.
