The Calangute panchayat on Friday inspected huts constructed in buffer zone near the Hindu crematorium at Cobrawaddo-Calangute and instructed the hotel owner to remove all of these.
While instructing the hotel owner to maintain the buffer zone and to avoid activity which would disturb peace in Calangute, Sarpanch Anthony Menezes said the panchayat will conduct another inspection of the site along with North Goa Planing and Development Authority on January 3, 2018.

The Calangute panchayat on Friday inspected huts constructed in buffer zone near the Hindu crematorium at Cobrawaddo-Calangute and instructed the hotel owner to remove all of these.
While instructing the hotel owner to maintain the buffer zone and to avoid activity which would disturb peace in Calangute, Sarpanch Anthony Menezes said the panchayat will conduct another inspection of the site along with North Goa Planing and Development Authority on January 3, 2018.

er had allegedly undertaken a construction in the buffer zone sometime in 2006 and acting on a complaint from the Babrashwar Devastan Trust, the construction was removed by the Goa Costal Zone Management Authority (GCZMA) and an order was issued in October 2016 banning any construction in buffer zone.
The Calangute panchayat has also passed a resolution banning construction in this buffer zone.
Unhappy that the hotel owner had constructed huts in the buffer zone, the Babrashwar Devastan Committee President Laxman Shirodkar complained to the Calangute panchayat with copies to the chief secretary, director of tourism, Bardez deputy collector, NGPDA and GCZMA.
Acting on the complaint, Sarpanch Anthony Menezes, Deputy Sarpanch Rupa Chodankar and other panchas inspected the site and found that the hotel owner had allegedly encroached on land and had constructed huts.
Hotel representatives, who were also present during the inspection, clarified that the huts were temporarily constructed to host the New Year's party. Menezes instructed them to remove all huts and to avoid the New Year Party at the disputed site. He also instructed them to maintain the buffer zone and to avoid anything which could disturb peace in Calangute.
"The buffer zone is also notified in the Outline Development Plan (ODP) of Calangute village. The panchayat along with an NGPDA team will inspect the place again on January 3, 2018," said Menezes.
"The land near the Hindu crematorium is declared a buffer zone and any construction in that zone could lead to a law and order problem. We will not tolerate anyone that tries to disturb peace in the village," he added.
