Power defaulters in Canacona taluka are an anxious lot, after the Canacona Electricity department is on a disconnection spree to recover the massive outstandings of power consumers in the taluka.
After issuing warnings, the Canacona electricity office over the last few days have disconnected several electricity connections of individuals for failure to pay bills ranging from thousands of rupees to lakhs of rupees.
“The move has helped the department in Canacona to make a reasonable recovery of about Rs 28 lakh as of Monday,” said Canacona Assistant Executive Engineer Vinayak Mhalshekar.
“Many people kept their bills pending over the past years and there are a few individuals with pending bills as high as Rs 2 lakh, while some have bills in the range of Rs 1 lakh and above.”
“As of date, we have an outstanding of approximately Rs 1.5 crore of arrears of electricity bills and the drive to cut-off/disconnect electricity connections will continue till areas are cleared,” he said.
Mhalshekar said the department is enforcing the recovery drive for the next 15 days and requested power consumers to pay their pending bills and avoid disconnections of power supply.
