Margao MLA Digambar Kamat’s stand that the acquired land at Sonsodo has been handed over to the Jamia Masjid, Malbhat for the upkeep and maintenance of the proposed kabrastan has stirred a hornet’s nest.

Petitioner in the Writ Petition in the High Court, Blaze Mota on Saturday reminded the Margao MLA that the Margao Municipality had acquired the land at Sonsodo for burial grounds for all three religious communities. Blaze expressed shock that an MoU has been inked by the Margao Municipality to hand over the acquired land to the Masjid. In a statement, Blaze pointed out that it was not proper for the Margao MLA to comment on the Sonsodo land acquired for the burial grounds when the matter is pending before the High Court.

“As per the report filed before the High Court, only land admeasuring 2500 square metres can be developed for the purpose of burial grounds. Kamat’s statement is intended to get political mileage and misguide the people in the run-up to the Lok Sabha polls,” he said. He added: “As an intervener in the High Court, I am asking the government to allot the acquired land for all the three religious communities since I am not against any particular community. The question of building a bridge connecting the main road to the acquired land does not arise since it has been reported in the High Court that only land admeasuring 2500 square meters can be used for the burial grounds.”
