OLD GOA
The Carambolim panchayat has decided to re-assess the taxes for houses, commercial establishments, religious structures and others within the jurisdiction of the panchayat.
In this connection, the panchayat has invited quotation from agencies for undertaking the exercise of the re-assessment.
When contacted, Sarpanch Kushta Salelkar confirmed that the re-assessment exercise would be undertaken once the monsoon gets over.
Salelkar further stated that the tax would be fixed as per the built-up area of the structures.
A source within the panchayat informed that the decision was taken after the Finance Commission remarked against the panchayat over the loss of revenue due to the non re-assessment of taxes.
“It’s been around 20 years that the taxes have not been re-assessed and it is high time that the same is done,” the source informed, while adding that once the report is prepared by the selected agency, the panchayat will fix the taxes as per the build up area.
“Today, people have extended their houses as well as their businesses but are still paying taxes of yesteryears. Once the re-assessment is done there will be uniform taxation and the panchayat will also earn additional revenue,” the source added.
