MARGAO
Margao Municipal Council’s solid waste management came back to haunt the authorities on Tuesday when carcass of cattle found its way at the Sonsodo waste dump yard.
As the disposal of the dead animals at the Sonsodo site came to the fore on Tuesday, questions were raised whether the carcasses of the animals can be just dumped on the dump yard without making efforts to bury them at a suitable place. Questions were also raised whether the civic body was ill-equipped to handle different types of waste that finds its way from the city to the Sonsodo dump yard.
The dumping of the carcasses at the site only raised fears around noon that the entire area will be enveloped by foul odour when labourers are working at the site as part of the solid waste management.
Sanitary inspector, Viraj Arabekar, who came to know about the episode only in the evening, inspected the site and decided to bury the carcasses. “After my attention was drawn to the dumping of the animal carcasses at the dumping site by a MMC vehicle, I visited the site in the evening and got the carcasses buried at the dump yard,” Arabekar claimed.
Replying to a question, the sanitary inspector said the sanitary section had put up a note to the Council around two years when the GSIDC had started bio-mining of the dump yard to clear the existing waste to identify a suitable site to dispose of dead animals. “A site to dispose of carcasses of dead animals had become necessary at that time as the dump yard was being cleared of the existing waste,” he said.
The issue, however, got a descent burial after the GSIDC stopped bio-mining of the Sonsodo dump yard and the City Fathers busy preoccupied with other priorities.
