Goa Forward party chief and former Deputy Chief Minister Vijai Sardesai was felicitated on Tuesday at Carmelite Monastery in Margao for his contribution by declaring the ruins of the Convent of Chimbel as a heritage structure.
A statement issued by the office of the GF president on Wednesday stated that the Town and Country Planning Board on June 22, 2019 had taken a historic decision to protect Monte Carmel Church and Convent of Chimbel, which is in ruins.
Sardesai was felicitated by Fr Archie Gonsalves in the presence of Retd Bishop Alexio Dias. The Conservation Committee of TCP chaired by Sardesai had on June 22, 2019 declared the
ruins of Monte Carmel Church and Convent of Chimbel dating back to 1760 as heritage structure.
“Touching gesture by the Carmelite Monastery, who never fails to recognise true contribution to the community and sincere attempts to safeguard our rich cultural heritage. We are blessed to have had the opportunity to serve you,” Sardesai said.
