MARGAO
When COVID-19 pandemic raised its ugly head three years ago, causing a strain of the existing infrastructure, including burial grounds, Seraulim village had feared the worst “ that the cemetery may not suffice with rising deaths taking place during the pandemic.

Around that time, Parish Priest Fr Benjamin Sacrafamilia and the committee members approached the South Goa MP Francisco Sardinha with a plea to sanction funds under the MPLAD scheme for the expansion of the existing cemetery.

Two years down the lane, work on the Rs 23.44 lakh cemetery at Seraulim stands completed with the South Goa MP inaugurating the project in the presence of Fabrica committee members and the parishioners on Sunday.

Fr Benjamin informed that since the Seraulim cemetery was very small and the village growing, he along with the committee members approached the South Goa MP after being informed that the MP has taken up the work of a spacious cemetery in Davorlim village. “Sardinha gave his word that he would take up the work as and when the funds are available,” Fr Benjamin said, while profusely thanking the MP for honouring his word and promise to sanction the cemetery for Seraulim.

In his address, the South Goa MP expressed his satisfaction that work on the cemetery is finally completed. He told the people that MPs are allowed to sanction funds under the MPLAD scheme to take up the work of burial grounds and crematorium for the community.
