MARGAO
Two major road works, a flyover at the Comba railway crossing and a link road, connecting the commercial capital to the Western bypass near the Vidya Vikas Academy school, aimed at streamlining traffic and decongesting the city, have received sanction from the Centre, thanks to Union Minister for Surface and Road Transport Nitin Gadkari.
The third major works involves hot mixing of the existing NH66 passing through the city and renovation and beatification of the traffic islands from Old market to the Navelim Church junction.
The NH66 passing through the city will be de-notified after completion of the road hot mixing work and the renovation of the traffic islands.
Briefing the media after launching tarring work at three housing societies at Aquem, PWD Minister Digambar Kamat said the flyover at the Comba railway gate has received the sanction from the Central government. “I had taken up this project with Union Minister Nitin Gadkar to accord top priority for the road flyover considering the traffic snarls at the railway crossing. The Minister was kind enough to give his sanction,. The government would float tender for the execution of the Comba flyover in the next few days”, Kamat said.
He said the dream project of linking Margao city to the existing Western bypass will finally take shape in the coming months. “The link road to the western bypass via the Vidya Vikas Academy will be executed soon. The tender has already been floated and the contractor will take up the work. Once completed, people of Margao can take to the Margao bypass to either proceed to North or South Goa”, he added.
On the de-notification of the existing NH66 passing through Margao, the PWD Minister the national highway will be de-notified once the existing highway road is hot mixed and the traffic islands beautified under central funds. ‘The centre will spend around Rs 30-40 crore on the development of traffic island and hot mixing of the highway passing through Margao before it is de-notified”, he added.
The PWD minister further said that hot mix plants will start functioning in the next few days, to pave way for the hot mixing of roads across the state.
