Waste in Chimbel has gone out of control with the garbage piling outside the Material Recovery Facility (MRF) at Indira Nagar and spilling onto the main road.

And it has become an eyesore for the villagers as well as visitors visiting Chimbel, with the area reeking of foul odour whenever one passes by that side.

The scene has been going on for a while now due to the Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC) not accepting dry waste for over a month, which resulted in accumulation of waste at the MRF site.

“The GWMC stopped collecting dry waste from Tiswadi panchayats for over a month due to which waste started accumulating,” a source inside the panchayat informed while also attributing the piling of waste to people from Indira Nagar and other areas indiscriminately dumping garbage in the area, including wet waste.

“The GWMC has now started accepting the dry waste. However, to clear the accumulated garbage it should take more than one week,” the source stated.

Some villagers have, however, targeted the Chimbel panchayat for not taking the issue of tackling garbage seriously.

“Instead of finding a solution to the garbage problem, the panchayat members are busy in electioneering,” a local Pravin Chopdecar stated.

The comment assumes significance against the background of Chimbel panchas including the sarpanch and deputy sarpanch joining the BJP at a function in Panaji on Saturday.

When contacted, Sarpanch Manisha Chopdekar informed that she has directed the garbage contractor to clear the garbage from the road by tomorrow.

"The piled waste will be cleared in 10 days," Chopdekar assured.
