PORVORIM
GPCC President Guirish Chodankar has alleged that incidents of violence, land-grabbing and illegal constructions are on the rise in Porvorim constituency with the blessings of local MLA and IT Minister Rohan Khaunte.
“Voices of opposition are being suppressed and if these trends continue unabated, the progress of Porvorim constituency will receive a severe setback and anarchy will prevail in the constituency,” warned Chodankar.
He was speaking at Porvorim after offering floral tributes to Mahatma Gandhi at the Martyr’s day programme organised by the Porvorim Block Congress Committee in Azad Bhavan. Admitting that the Congress had erred in rendering support to Independent MLA Rohan Khaunte during the last assembly session, Chodankar assured that such mistakes would not be
repeated in future.
“No doubt, Congress has a strong base in Porvorim which needs to be further strengthened. The GPCC will render full support to the Porvorim Block Committee to carry out social activities and gain public confidence and regain the seat during the next assembly election,” said Chodankar.
Former union minister Ramakant Khalap stated that Gandhi believed in equality and relentlessly spoke about women empowerment.
“We should imbibe the values of Gandhiji and work together towards a society where people won’t be discriminated on the basis of caste, creed, colour, or region. That will be the true tribute to the Mahatma.”
“These days politics has become self-centric rather than people-centric. This tendency is harmful for the progress of the state,” said Khalap.
North Goa District Vice President Sanjiv Naik said during the course of the last 10 years, Porvorim constituency was totally neglected by the Congress Pradesh Committee.
“Instead of fielding our own candidate in the last assembly election, the Congress rendered support to Independent MLA Rohan Khaunte, which proved to be a big mistake. The workers have been demoralised and to rejuvenate them and win the Porvorim seat, the GPCC should assure full support to the Porvorim Block committee,” said Naik.
GPCC Vice President M K Sheikh, GPCC Spokesperson Amarnath Panjikar, North Goa Congress President Vijay Bhike, Mahila Congress Vice President Bina Naik, Porvorim Block Committee Convenor Shankar Fadte and Radhika Sawant also spoke on the occasion.
