Chodnekars have called off the planned public meeting slated for Sunday to press for rollback in Ro-Ro ferry fare, apparently after a request from the local MLA to defer the meeting by 15 days.
Addressing reporters at Chorao on Saturday under the banner of United Chodnekars, Samresh Vaigankar informed that they received a call from the MLA's office stating that the MLA wanted to meet them to discuss about the fare issue.
"So, some of our representatives met the MLA Premendra Shet in the morning and he requested us to defer Sunday's public meeting as he assured us that he would take up the issue with Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and try to persuade him to rollback the ferry fares," Vaigankar informed.
"Accordingly, we discussed the same with others and we have come to a decision that Sunday's public meeting be called off, and the MLA be given 15 days time to resolve our issue," he added.
But, Tony Noronha said that if their issues is still not resolved by then, a delegation of United Chodnekars along with the MLA and Chodan panchayat members will meet the CM and try to convince him to rollback the fare.
"The MLA has told us to submit our proposal, which we have ready, when the meeting is held with the CM," Noronha added and stated that the future course of action will be decided only if the delegation fails to impress upon the CM for a rollback in Ro-Ro ferry fare.
Another local Shrikrishna Haldankar said that majority of the people whom they spoke to agreed that time should be given to the MLA to get the issue resolved.
"Though, some said that it is a tactic to buy time till the Assembly gets over, our decision is based on the feedback received from the majority," Haldankar opined and said that if the issue does not get resolved then the agitation will be resumed.
