Citizens demand immediate stop to dry waste handling at old fish market

MARGAO
With the old fish market right behind the Margao Municipal building resembling a mini-Sonsodo for want of disposal of the baled waste, residents and businessmen from Ward No 11 have called for an immediate stop to the dry waste handling activity at the site.

MMC Chief Officer, Rohit Kadam, however, has pointed out that what is stored at the old fish market site baled is dry waste, adding that the transportation of the baled waste to the cement factories in Karnataka has slowed down with some of the factories shutting down operations.

In a letter, the residents and businessmen drew the attention of the Chief Officer to the health hazard staring at them due to the garbage mismanagement. “We have been facing tremendous issues with air pollution, unhygienic conditions, rodent/ vermin/ pest issues, filthy smell, unhealthy living conditions, and possible soil/ land pollution due to the unorganised and haphazard dumping of garbage in a housing/ residential/ business neighbourhood. This issue is a major concern and if not resolved immediately may cause serious health problems to us, as we cannot open our doors and windows due to the gravely depreciated air quality and the garbage which is baled which is a very dirty sight,” they pointed out.

Saying the mounting heaps of garbage thrown everyday is also creating a hub of mosquitoes which will cause fatal diseases like dengue and malaria, the citizens and businessmen have made a fervent plea to the Chief Officer to provide them relief to live in a clean environment and initiating an operation against the growing health hazard by relocating the solid waste management plant/ garbage disposal.
