MAPUSA
The Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) has decided to approach the Goa State Agricultural Marketing Board for an area of 5,000 sq mt from the land in their possession to set up a hawker’s zone in Mapusa.
The council in its meeting on Thursday has resolved to write to the agricultural marketing board requesting for land in Mapusa sub-yard to set up a hawkers’s zone.
MMC chairperson Rohan Kavlekar said the agricultural marketing board has around 18,531 sq mt of open land in Mapusa sub-yard.
“We can request the board to release 5000 sq mt of land to the municipal council to set up a hawker’s zone,” Kavlekar said and further added that the proposal got the nod of Urban Development Minister and local MLA Francis D’Souza.
Senior councilor Sandip Falari pointed out that earlier a similar resolution for hawker’s zone was passed under the TCP scheme.
Keeping both options open, the council decided to write to the agricultural marketing board requesting for land and to go ahead with the proposed area under the TCP scheme.
On the issue of the garbage treatment plant, the council decided to go with the government’s advice and float expression of interest for setting up of the waste plant in Cunchelim.
“The company which had first approached the council has no experience in the field and therefore were ready to install the plant free for us,” the chairperson said.
Since the engineering section needed vehicles for civic work, the council decided to purchase one compactor, a small JCB, a truck and a jeep through municipal funds.
The council’s earlier attempt to buy the vehicles through the Goa solid waste management corporation and GSUDA failed.
Councilor, Tushar Tople suggested purchasing a new hearse van as the municipality had only one.
The chairperson suggested purchasing it under the MPLAD fund.
