GCCI was represented by Chandrakant Gawas, chairman of logistics committee, while GMOEA was represented by its secretary, Glen Kalavampara.
In its representation, GCCI pointed out that the debris of parts that had collapsed, and the parts which are now in danger of falling, pose a serious threat to the safety of citizens who use the river for their day-to-day needs.
Meanwhile, the Captain of Ports had already warned that there shouldn’t be any traffic in the river, particularly during low tide.
Further delays in clearing the debris and the overhanging part may result in total stoppage of traffic in the river. After the
collapse of the old bridge at Mahad on the Goa-Mumbai highway, GCCI had written to the public works department (PWD) urging them to take preventive measures so that a similar tragedy doesn’t happen in Goa.
This was particularly important because most
of the bridges/culverts in Goa were built during the Portuguese era.
GCCI had suggested that PWD should conduct a technical audit by a committee of experts to ascertain the structural stability of
all Portuguese-era bridges and culverts.
