Colva creek inspected, affidavit to be filed in HC

Colva creek inspected, affidavit to be filed in HC

MARGAO
Days after it was cleaned up of weeds and waste, the petitioner in the High Court Judith Almeida along with the Water Resources Department officials and the contractor inspected the creek on Friday before the filing of an affidavit in the High Court on the status of the water body.

The inspection team walked along the creek to take a close look at the clean-up operation. While all looked well, more so with the waste finally disappearing from the creek, the inspection team has expressed concern over the discharge of wastewater into the water body by the establishments.

The WRD official Sainath and the contractor briefed Judith, who had filed the Public Interest Litigation in the High Court in 2011 how the agency intends to further develop the area, including the walkway and the wire mesh over the body to prevent waste dumping.

The petitioner made a fervent plea to the WRD official that nothing should be done which would destroy the vegetation along the creek. She also sought to know from the WRD official how the agencies intend to tackle the discharge of waste and sewage waters by the establishments given that the 7.5 MLD Colva STP is not yet commissioned to date.

The team also visited the area near the toilet block constructed in the children’s play area to find out whether the STP of the block is in working condition.

The social activist is expected to give a detailed report on the inspection to the WRD and will file her affidavit in the High Court when her PIL comes up for hearing on June 20, when the WRD and other agencies are scheduled to file the status report on the Colva creek and the Colva STP.
