Allowing the jail inmates to construct and burn a huge effigy of Ravana inside the Colvale jail premises earned four jail staff, including an Assistant Superintendent, in the central jail a suspension on Friday.
The act of misconduct came to light after a video of the effigy went viral on social media.
The Inspector General of Prisons has suspended assistant superintendent Chandrakant Harijan, two jailers, Mahesh Phadte and Anil Goankar and an assistant jailer Ramnath Gawde for dereliction of duties.
The IG Prisons has also reportedly sought an explanation from the officials over the incident.
Sources in the jail informed that the jail inmates constructed a massive effigy of Ravana on the eve of the Dussehra festival and burnt it later in the night.
Firecrackers were also used while celebrating the event inside the jail premises.
Incidentally, the video of the incident going viral also exposes a security lapse on how mobiles have slipped inside the jail premises.
