PORVORIM
Kiosks erected along BB Borkar Road in Alto-Porvorim have become a major cause of traffic congestion. Since work on the flyover began, vehicles travelling from Mapusa towards Porvorim and Panjim have been diverted through Defence Colony and BB Borkar Road.
One of the kiosks is used for vehicle repair work, while another is operated by a fruit vendor. Haphazard parking of two-wheelers and vehicles stopping near these kiosks increase the risk of rear-end collisions. Encroachment on footpaths also forces pedestrians onto the road, creating a safety hazard amid heavy traffic. Residents say several accidents have occurred at this junction, but the Penha de Franca Panchayat has not removed the kiosks.
Similarly, kiosks located opposite DIET obstruct the smooth flow of traffic. Residents question why the panchayat has hesitated to remove them and say the structures spoil the appearance of the area. Speaking on condition of anonymity, a doctor alleged that some kiosks are a source of income for panchayat members, which is why the panchayat is reluctant to act. The doctor claimed that some kiosks on BB Borkar Road are owned by panchayat members and rented out.
The doctor pointed out that Chief Minister Pramod Sawant recently appealed to panchayats not to allow kiosks to be erected along roadsides. The Collector had also issued directions to panchayats to remove such structures. While kiosks at Malim were removed, those on BB Borkar Road and near DIET remain in place.
The doctor urged the Collector to take firm action and direct the panchayat to remove the roadside kiosks immediately.
