Inspection follows a complaint of large-scale cutting
GCZMA officials carry out a fresh inspection of the Moira river following complaints of alleged mangrove destruction.

Allegations of large-scale destruction of mangroves along the Moira riverbank have prompted the Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority (GCZMA) to undertake a fresh site inspection at the site on Friday.
The inspection was carried out by GCZMA Expert Member Harshada Gauns, Engineer Bhargavi Kelkar and Field Surveyor Siddhi Morajkar in the presence of environmental activist Dr Nerissa Miranda, who had lodged a complaint on the destruction.
Speaking during the inspection, Dr Miranda expressed concern over the reported cutting of mangroves and stressed the need for immediate measures to protect the remaining vegetation. She said mature mangroves play a critical role in maintaining coastal ecosystems and that any loss would take decades to recover.
“I have seen mangrove cutting taking place. We may not know who is responsible, but what remains must be protected,” Dr Miranda said, adding that replantation efforts cannot compensate for the immediate loss of fully grown mangroves.
She also appealed to citizens to report environmental violations, warning that public silence often enables such activities to continue unchecked.
Goa Green Brigade Convenor Avertino Miranda, who was present during the inspection, said the site visit revealed extensive damage to mature mangroves along the riverbank.
Describing the destruction as irreversible, he noted that mangroves serve as important breeding and nesting habitats for several species and act as a natural barrier against flooding.
Demanding stringent action, Avertino Miranda urged authorities to identify those responsible and initiate legal proceedings against them, stating that persons in possession of the property should be held accountable for the damage.
